There are a full range of local services that you would
expect from a well established ierland resort.
Food & Drink:
The cuisine in Menorca is essentially Mediterranean,
and you will find a wide range of classic Spanish dishes
as well as local specialities.
In Mahon, Ciutadella and the inland towns, lunch is
served from around 1pm, dinner from 8pm, although most
people arrive much later than this.
Many restaurants offer a menu del dia (menu of the
day), a set three-course meal with wine and bread included
in the price. These can be excellent value although
the choice of dish can be limited.
Popular main courses include stews, charcoal grills,
roast suckling pig (asados de lechona) and shoulder
of lamb.
Menorcan dishes, pride of place must go to fresh seafood
and fish. Prawns and mussels feature on most menus,
while squid, swordfish and sole are widely available.
Other seafood delights include tuna with mayonnaise,
stuffed squid, baked cuttlefish and peix al forn amb
patatas - oven baked fish with potatoes.
If you hanker for a taste of home, there are quite
a lot of English pubs. Two of the best are to be found
in Sant Climent, which has a small British community.
Menorca
is also famouse for its range of cheeses. Mahón
is a traditional semi-soft cheese, produced from cow's
milk on Minorca, the outermost of the three Balearic
Islands. The city of Mahón is the major town
on this small agricultural island.
Traditionally, to produce Mahón cheese, the curd
is placed in the center of a cloth. The corners of the
cloth are then knotted and twisted together, which gives
the cheese its typical "cushion" shape. It
then matures in the cloth for several days.
